More young men in California rise in pitch at the end of their sentences when talking. This process is known as “uptalk” or “valleygirl speak” and has in the past been associated with young females, typically from California or Australia.
A pair of twins, June and Jennifer, spoke in a cryptic language only to each other for 30 years. After 14 years in a mental hospital, one of the twins was found dead, with no apparent cause. The living twin finally spoke: “I’m free at last, liberated, and Jennifer has given up her life for me.”
The relative number of English speakers is higher in Sweden, Norway, Denmark and The Netherlands than it is in Canada.
